GOD FRIENDED ME

One day while helping a dear family friend of ours put up their Christmas decorations, the gentleman mentioned a show he had been watching that would be on after the Sunday night football games that evening.

It was just a casual mention but in his description of the show, I realized it was a show I had caught a glimpse of a few times, via a passing commercial, that I might be interested in checking out but never took the time to do so.

I decided to tape the show that night though it was the 8th show in the series. My husband suggested we watch the shows from the pilot which was three months earlier. That is what we ended up doing; now I can actually say “I binge watched a series” because we had a week long free subscription access through the television station. We successfully watched 8 shows in less than a week. 🙂

When I was first watching the show I was wondering if it would somehow lead to some thoughts to write about but it wasn’t until the 8th show that somehow it did inspire me to pen some thoughts….so here goes!

The show is entitled……

In case you have not seen the show the two minute synopsis is that the main character, Miles, a part time podcaster, is an outspoken atheist despite his father being a minister. One day Miles receives a friend request on Facebook from God and at first refuses to accept God’s friend request. Through a series of events Miles finally gives in and decides to accept God’s friend request.

Each show “God” sends Miles a picture and name suggestion that Miles, along with friends Cara (who was actually one of the original friend suggestions) and Rakesh end up helping in some major way. They usually act as “detectives” researching and piecing together links of information to either help save one of the friend suggestions lives, meeting up with estranged family members, etc.

The three main characters think this “God” account is a hoax and they keep trying to find out who is behind it all. In the latest episode they are getting very close to figuring it out.  As can be expected from a TV show, everything ends up fitting together and working out well.  These situations make Miles wrestle with faith and have actually brought him closer to his father.

Regardless, all three end up feeling great helping others and their lives are changed for the better because of the new people they encounter and their willingness to extend themselves in making other’s lives better.

Despite the sometimes unrealistic scenarios of the three main characters always having things work out in their solving the situations, the show made me think about some of its major concepts that we can certainly apply to our daily lives….

God is always waiting for us to be His friend. He won’t force Himself on us but He longs for us.

I do not call you servants any longer, because servants do not know what their master is doing. Instead, I call you friends, because I have told you everything I heard from my Father.   –John 15:15 (GNT)

Every person God puts in our path is an opportunity to be our friend. Our lives are to be lived in community showing ourselves friendly.

Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed.   If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble.  –Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 (NLT)

Isn’t it exciting to see how your life has a ripple effect on another’s life? One small comment or gesture can change one life at a time having a ripple effect!

For not only has the word of the Lord sounded forth from you in Macedonia and Achaia, but your faith in God has gone forth everywhere, so that we need not say anything.  –1 Thessalonians 1:8 (ESV)

Isn’t a big part of our purpose on this earth to help others in whatever way we can?  Didn’t Jesus give us that example?

I tell you for certain that if you have faith in me, you will do the same things I am doing. You will do even greater things, now that I am going back to the Father.   –John 14:12 (CEV)

Through helping others have you experienced how it is more blessed to give than to receive?

And I have been a constant example of how you can help those in need by working hard. You should remember the words of the Lord Jesus: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.'”  –Acts 20:35 (NLT)

For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.  –Ephesians 2:10 (NLT)

    1. Thanks for taking the time to read and comment, Gene. I am glad in God’s providential timing he had our lives intersect! Thanks for the blessing you are and all you do to help others…one person at a time!

  1. What better friend to have than God? We all have friends that we will rely on from time to time but God is the one true friend who we can rely on all of the time. What a gift !
I think God uses all of us to help others but sometimes we just don’t realize it. While I hope that if I’m able to help someone that they feel better, I know how it makes me feel so why wouldn’t I continue helping wherever I can?
Christine I truly appreciate your posts and I look forward to them whenever you’re able to do so.

    Thanks !!
